Synopsis

First produced in 1960, Tom Coffey’s play Anyone Could Rob a Bank is a spirited, side-splitting comedy, with a farcical, highly improbable plot. The play is set in the kitchen of Badger Grey’s house and shop, in the town of Ballybawn. Having read a newspaper account of an unsuccessful bank robbery in Dublin, Badger plans, with his brother Jeeren Grey and next-door neighbor Windy O’Sullivan, how they might conduct a “successful” bank robbery. Since they had no intention of engaging in such a crime, imagine their amazement when two days later, a robbery to the exact specifications of these masterminds’, is carried out at the local bank in Ballybawn. You won’t believe the mayhem, the accusations, the shenanigans that follow! Adding to the hilarity is a further cast of exaggerated characters: Badger’s hair-brained wife, Sarah; his flirtatious daughter, Noreen; her love-interest, the local police sergeant; a current house guest, Tony O’Shea; and Badger’s nephew, Mickey–a wannabe champion boxer.

Coffey’s play is articulate. The characters mesh very well, and Coffey has granted them the opportunity to be creative and artistic. This ludicrous, light-hearted tale will grant a respite from your daily grind, and you’ll leave the theatre thinking “good show!”
